Welcome
I am very proud to have been appointed Headteacher at Unity College and look forward to working with students, parents, staff, governors and the Local Authority to make Unity College a very successful and highly regarded learning environment within our community.
One of the most difficult questions facing a parent is ‘To which Secondary School should I send my son or daughter?’ There is only one answer. You should send him or her to the school where he or she will be happy and achieve success. At Unity College it is our aim to establish a culture in which our students develop a passion for learning that will serve their needs throughout and beyond school. We wish to promote the pursuit of excellence and achievement by every student to enable them to make the very best of their abilities and skills. It is our intention to create and maintain an ethos that encourages high standards, self-reliance, co-operation, enthusiasm and initiative.
Unity College recognises that young people have many and varied talents, and we ensure that our learning programmes are designed to meet those individual needs. At Unity, we will also challenge students to consider choices they may not have thought of, and by encouraging students to use their initiative and powers of imagination, help them to achieve more than they thought possible.
At Unity College, we believe it is a privilege to work with young people and our challenge is to encourage them to achieve their ambitions and to exceed their own expectations. Individual achievement is celebrated and success rewarded. We believe in a three-way partnership of students, parents and staff working together with one aim in mind – that of providing the best possible education we can for each individual student, a world class education for the twenty first century.
Unity College is part of the government’s ‘Building Schools for the Future Programme’. Although our state of the art brand new building will not be ready until 2009, our existing premises has excellent facilities for Physical Education, Science, Information Technology and Performing Arts. The exciting design process for the new building is well underway and the new College will be one of the most modern, innovative and best equipped schools in the country and will undoubtedly be a very exciting environment in which to learn.
I hope that this prospectus gives you a flavour of what life is like at Unity College, I encourage you to visit the college to see for yourself the high quality learning and teaching that takes place both within and beyond the classroom. Visits and personal tours can be arranged at any time, come and meet and talk with students and staff about Unity College. We look forward to welcoming you to Unity College.

SEN
Unity College, as an all-ability comprehensive, welcomes students with special educational needs.
Students who experience difficulties with their learning are assessed on entry to the college and are then placed on our SEN register. The Learning Support team organises and delivers support to those students on the SEN register, which also includes students with a Statement of Special Educational Needs.
The team is also responsible for raising staff awareness of the needs of students both with learning difficulties and those who are exceptionally able. The Learning Support team, including Teaching Assistants, whose hours are linked to Statements, provide a vital part of the support across the college.
It is the aim of Unity College, where special educational needs are concerned, to work in closepartnership with parents.
A full policy statement on SEN is available from the college office.
Our Senior SENCO is Anna Reynolds.
The college has an extensive Student Support system in place including :
• Special Educational Needs • Inclusion Centre • Youth and Community Team
• Student Support Centre • Able and Talented Mentor
Excellence Cluster
As part of our work within the region’s Excellence Cluster, we run a wide and diverse range of activities and events to support students’ learning and personal skills as well as challenging our able and talented students to stretch themselves. Throughout the year we organise inspirational vocational visits and university summer schools. Summer schools also take place in the state of the art City Learning Centre which we are fortunate enough to have on site. A variety of residential visits take place during the year including revision, leadership and outdoor pursuits.
Extension revision sessions also take place within the college and visiting external speakers contribute towards making these relevant and engaging. Students receive individual mentoring and are given the chance to develop their thinking skills throughout their time at Unity. Some of the Excellence Cluster extra curricular activities include Archaeology, Website Design, Astronomy and Sports events.
